Overview
Our client, a book publisher was using his Magento 1.x ecommerce store to sell the books. As Magento 2 offers better performance and security, he wanted to upgrade it Magento 2.x. We took the standard official approach of upgrading our client Magento 1.x instance to Magento 2.
Requirements
Challenges
- Initial time was spent on to document all the custom code & extensions being used in client magento 1.x instance along with their functionality. Similarly all theme customizations on frontend pages like Category Listing Page, Product Detail page were documented. Our developers have analysed those in detail and came up with plan and process to do the upgrade. In summary these activities were performed to achieve a smooth & successful upgrade.
- Database: This is the first step, Using Migration tool we upgraded the Magento 1.x Database to Magento 2 and connected this new Magento Upgraded DB with Magento 2 filesystem.
- Extensions : We have replaced all old Magento 1 extensions with new updated Magento 2 extensions provided by the vendors and few of them we have to rewrite and tweak them.
Custom Code Migration
- Using Magento code Migration tool we migrated majority of the code(65%), the remaining our developers have to rewrite them or change them as per the new Magento 2 standards.
- Client Magento1 integrations with zendesk, Ship Station and few other were have to be replaced with new Magento 2 extensions
System Maintenance & others
- Clients all existing cron jobs were tested in magento 2, few programs for example product Imports etc. were migrated after rewriting of code.
- FPC was set up on Magento2 instance to load the site faster.
- Configuring Redis as the session storage.

Page loading times for the category listing page and product detail page have reduced drastically.

One area where Magento1 was taking time was checkout process using Magento 2 our client’s customers have found improved and faster checkout process. This has helped in the conversion rates.

Magento 2 new theme for the store is modern and clean which is also responsive by default.
TTFB (time to first byte) reduced drastically which helped their SEO rankings with google. -
