Overview

Our client North America’s Aftermarket commercial vehicle parts provider, wanted a Liferay portal solution to communicate and collaborate, network with other organization members and disseminate plethora of information such as Product news, Product prices discount and rebates information etc. They also want to deliver Marketing & Training programs, sales and service support for their fleet customers and service experts via this Portal.

  • Businesss Requirements and Challenges.

    • Comprehensive Social portal functionality for  collaboration, document sharing, Videos, wiki and other content. Video and other huge contents needs to be Shared on Amazon S3 for scalability purposes.

    • The portal needs to be used by their partners, distributors and their resellers and they have very complex partner hierarchy which should be used in setting up permissions and workflow.

    • The complex logical layer and the interactions between the website and third party integration's are written in PHP and Python code.
    • Their competitors and industry counterparts had made massive ‘Digital Transformation’ exercise and our client also wants to be on pace with current technology so they can reap substantial benefits which digital society offers.
    • Sensitive documents such a price files, discount files etc for which access needs to be given based on roles and also its usage by members should be audited.

    • The architecture has been built with integration of the components and frameworks like OpenERP, Yii, Postgress, Postfix, Pentaho.

    • Portal should be responsive and should work with ease especially in small devices. Few activities which the like the application should excel small devices are Users should be able to filter / drill down or search effectively.
    • Another challenge was Importing voluminous existing data such as Users, Programs, Price files, Rebate Files, Store locations (Distributors/Resellers) Latitude and Longitudinal values from multiple sources in Liferay Portlets.
    • The company had very small IT Department and they made conscious decision to not  let it grow to keep costs down and that's one of the reason they choose AWS cloud. And further they wanted continuous support for both Liferay Application and Infrastructure support (AWS Cloud) as well from a company who did the implementation.

    • Clients existing portal solution was based on multiple disjointed applications and there was lot of duplication and also these apps required multiple log-ins which was hampering the collaboration effort and productivity.
    • The company’s older portal had very low levels of engagement from employees, partners and other members as such they want to improve it, a new, interactive intranet would be the first step in the modernization.
    • Our client needs was to support wide range of content types for connecting, interacting and sharing knowledge and working with other members. Also they wanted compelling user experience so it can be adopted widely across all organizations.

  • Key Features Implemented by KTree

    • New Liferay 7 MVC Portlets for What's New, Announcements, Brochures through which information can be disseminated based on roles and permissions.
    • Mini LMS module for imparting training to distributors and employees using Training Manuals which are linked with Training Categories.
    • New Liferay 7 module to audit all user actions/activities (who, what, when). Storage is done in elasticsearch  indices.
    • Content uploading to few categories (sensitive content categories) triggers Kaleo workflow for approvals.
    • New Liferay 7 module named Address Book which enables users ‘Search by Contact’ or ‘By Organization’ feature to find distributors and their resellers and Google Maps Integration to display addresses as markers.

    • Infrastructure setup was done using AWS VPS and other AWS Cloud services such as Amazon S3, Amazon RDS,  Route 53 and Elastic Load balancing were used.
    • A new Liferay MVC Module, Video Viewer/Manager  with user uploaded videos which are stored on Amazon S3 , ability to add Youtube video links.
    • Google Analytics integration for insights to analyze content consumption patterns,  such as Events like download,  View etc..
    • Elastic Search integration with Liferay 7 for blazing speed when  content, videos, auditing activities retrieval is done.
    • Member organizations can upload their store photos themselves, approval for publishing of those photos is handled via  Kaleo workflow process.

  • Sharing

    New Liferay 7 MVC ‘What's New’ Portlet to share Announcements, posts, documents, newsletter and Brochures.

  • Customization

    Heat is converted into usable electricity via a thermoelectric generator. This powers a fan and sends surplus electricity to a USB charging port.

  • Expiration Schedule 

    Enhanced feature for easy attachment of documents which automatically expires on given scheduled date.

  • Authorization & Authentication

    Integration of  Liferay Permissions to control delivery of the notifications and also for providing access to those documents.

  • Schedule Notifications

    Broadcast Daily and weekly notifications based on schedule date and time using Liferay Fragments.

  • File and Folder Permissions

    Inherit the permissions of folder and apply same permissions to the newly uploaded content using Liferay Service Wrapper.

  • Video Manager & Viewer

    • Upload of videos /  youtube links based on category and tags 
    • Video viewer with regular filters and search functionality
    • Integration of  Liferay Permissions to control access level to these media.
    • Role based access to the resource data.
    • Search the videos, based on varied filters through  Elastic-search API
    • Integration of Media library with Amazon S3 for scalability

Other Enhancements

    • Performance Optimization using JS Compression, CSS compression and also using sprites in them which reduced the number of requests.
    • Liferay Fragments, feature was used for editing Custom Attributes and also for publishing images.
    • Multiple new custom attributes were added to Users and Organizations for ex. ‘wMember’ (Member, Service Expert, Fleet) allows to differentiate users. Override Liferay action command to persist attribute values.

    • Performance Optimization

    • Share this custom attribute data globally in various other Liferay modules such as Address Book and Locate Us (Maps)
    • New feature from which CRUD actions are generated  along with RBAC permissions on custom attributes.
    • Usage of OSGI Module patching concept for Archiving the Documents realtime or by scheduling at later date & time.




    • Responsive Theme

  • Liferay Training Portlet

    • New Basic Learning Management Liferay portlet which is used for imparting Training to Suppliers, Vendors and their business users.
    • New course or courses which user didn’t took are differentiated with a label ‘New’ . Users get notifications if any new courses are uploaded,
    • Certificate  generation with predefined template after completion of the course, which users can download themselves. Liferay service builder used for achieving this functionality.
    • Ability to upload all type of content formats such as .docx, pdf, pptx etc.. for including external links.








    • SAAS based platform to access the instance by users.
    • Supports around 16 languages
    • Export and import options
    • Drag and Drop project based on status 
  • Liferay Audit Module

    • All user actions/activities  in the Liferay portal performed are tracked for auditing purposes with username, timestamp, IP and few other attributes.
    • New Audit dashboard with customizable filters with ability to Export in various formats.  
    • Usage  of OSGI service filter similar to what we have in Liferay DXP to add this behaviour and also creation of new ElasticSearch API for this OSGI service.

    • SAAS based platform to access the instance by users.
    • Supports around 16 languages

  • Address Book in Liferay

    • New Liferay Portlet to search for address, hours of timings and User Contacts etc  of the organizations.
    • Also displays other attributes such as Photos of Organization, location Map etc.
    • Users has access to only allowed organizations as per RBAC to see the information.
